Course Description

SC Online Resources is designed to familiarize participants with South Carolina endorsed Internet resources for teachers. Participants will have numerous opportunities to apply new skills and develop their own Internet content enriched activities that support their curricular goals. Participants will collaborate with their peers and facilitator on ways they have incorporated the Internet resources into their own classroom. Through on-line discussions, posting of projects and participant self-reflections, the facilitator will assess how course content is being mastered. In addition, the facilitator will provide individualized assistance for specific learning styles as well as supplemental resources when deemed necessary.

Credit and Cost

Upon completion of all course requirements, South Carolina educators applying for certificate renewal under Options 1 & 2 of the Credit Renewal Matrix will receive 40 renewal credits.

There is a $30 non-refundable registration fee for this course.

Prerequisites

This is an intermediate level course for teachers, technology specialists, curriculum specialists, professional development specialists, or other school personnel. Participants are expected to have regular access to computers. In addition, participants should be proficient with using word processing, PowerPoint software, email, browsing the Internet, using attachments, uploading and downloading content, and navigating to computer files.

The course is hosted online by eLearning SC Blackboard https://elearning.ed.sc.gov, a course management system. Login and password are required to access the course.

Goals

1.)     Students will have the opportunity to learn about and explore:

2.) Students will develop a basic understanding of navigating through the three resources.
3.) Students will create an Internet content enriched lesson plan that is aligned to specific state curriculum and technology standards.
4.) Participants will discuss and share completed activities using the Discussion Board within https://elearning.ed.sc.gov/

Assignments

This 6 week course is divided into six sessions which each include readings, an activity, and an online discussion and a final project. The time for completing each session is estimated to be 5 - 6 hours.

Lesson Plan Template: Participants will create and share a technology-enhanced lesson incorporating the resources explored each session. Course participants are expected to complete weekly assignments, including active participation in the online discussion board. In addition, participants will develop and share their ideas to incorporate tools and strategies presented in the course into their own curricula. The lesson must contain all elements listed in the rubric.

Discussion Forums
: Participants are expected to complete weekly discussion assignments and actively participate in the online discussion board. In the discussions, participants will develop and share their ideas to incorporate tools and strategies presented in the course into their own curricula.

Attendance and Late Assignments Policy

Attendance will be determined by completion of weekly online assignments. Assignment due dates are midnight of the last date of each session.

BlackBoard's time stamp given within the Discussion Board will determine if the assignments were completed on time.

Late assignments will not be accepted without prior arrangement with instructor.

An assignment Calendar and rubric for participant use can be viewed online or downloaded via the Course Information button, after the course instructor has given registered participants login information for the online course.

Assessment and Support

A rubric will be used to assess weekly participation and the lesson plans.

The GradeBook feature accessed by the User Tools Button on the course homepage will serve as the participant?s portfolio and provide assessment feedback. Course participants will be assessed throughout this course by the assignments submitted to the facilitator via the Discussion Forums. The Grade Book will be used to provide participants with weekly assessment of assignments and discussion. 80% of possible points from discussion board work and final project must be achieved in order to pass the course. These are the criteria to be used for evaluating successful participation in and completion of this course for 40renewal credit points. Participants are required to complete readings, an activity, and a discussion assignment for each session.

Course Products
Participants will create a technology-enhanced lesson plan and provide feedback to one other participant. The projects must contain all elements listed in the lesson plan rubric.

Discussion Participation
Participants will be evaluated on the frequency and quality of their discussion board participation. Participants are required to post a minimum of two substantial postings each session, including one that begins a new thread and one that responds to an existing thread. Postings that begin new threads will be reviewed based on their relevance, demonstrated understanding of course concepts, examples cited, and overall quality. Postings that respond to other participants will be evaluated on relevance, degree to which they extend the discussion, and tone.

Ongoing Support is provided online within a guided discussion forum used to discuss and share strategies, challenges, and resources.

To borrow from the SC Educational Television tagline "Expanding the View" . We will take a closer look this session at the ETV Partner sites as well as other gold mine sites for specific subjects and even a specialized site for the In -Be-Tweens age students (9-12 years old).

Session Three: DISCUS- Encyclopedias http://www.scdiscus.org/
DISCUS-Digital Information for South Carolina USers.
DISCUS is South Carolina's Virtual Library, it provides all South Carolinians with equitable access to an electronic library of essential information sources. DISCUS is administered by the South Carolina State Library in cooperation with school, college and public libraries. DISCUS is funded by the South Carolina General Assembly with supplemental funding by the federal Library Services and Technology Act

Become familiar with how to access DISCUS using appropriate username and password and navigate through designated DISCUS resources

Session Four: DISCUS- Periodical Resources http://www.scdiscus.org/
Encyclopedias are a great place to start the research process. Periodicals are another wonderful source and DISCUS provides a manageable way for students to find and use up- to- date periodicals. We are going to explore Junior Edition for Middle School and up and Kids Info Bits, for K-5.
